Membership
SEL’s members pay 1,5% of their gross income as membership fee, which the employer takes directly from their salary and renders account for to the union. The membership fee is divided between a share that goes to the union and a share that goes into the unemployment fund. A person studying in a college of the foodstuff sector may join the union as a student member.
Membership benefits cover among others employment counseling and legal aid. The union assists its members in disagreement issues concerning the employment, attends to matters through legal proceedings and pays for legal aid unless agreement in another way is reached.
During a possible strike the union pays strike allowance.
Members receive monthly the Elintae-journal and a reduction for subscriptions of workers magazines.
Having been a member of the union for 25 years, the member gets as reward a five-day holiday in a domestic holiday resort.
Members may spend a vacation at the two holiday resorts of the union at a bargain cost.
The union organises summer and winter days and different kinds of activities for the youth and retired members.
When a member becomes unemployed The Food Workers’ Unemployment Fund assists in issues pertaining to unemployment.
Unemployment benefit
The Food Workers’ Unemployment Fund pays to unemployed or members layed-off an earnings related daily allowance, which is 65-75% of the salary when membership of the fund has lasted at least 10 months and membership fees have been paid.
Payment condition for the earnings related daily allowance is that the person has prior to unemployment or laying-off worked for 43 weeks at 18 hours a week. The payment condition also applies to 28 months preceding the unemployment, but sickness, maternity, paternity and parental leaves, education and military service may lengthen the period of examination.
Agreement on imbursement of the membership fee
The imbursement of membership fee by the employer is a traditional way jointly agreed with the employers to carry out the collecting of the membership fee of trade unions. The trade union membership fee is also eligible for tax deduction. Below you can find a printable agreement, which you can submit to your employer to be signed. Print this in two copies. One remains with the employer and send the other copy to the union.
